Waco, TX, is a beautiful city with a rich history and local flavor.  We wanted guests to have a taste of this by viewing our artwork.  This package’s selection process intentionally captured Waco from multiple angles.  We wanted to capture Waco’s history and resilience in the iconic Alico Building, its growth in the courthouse, and its artistic character in the green door.  While Waco has so much more to offer, we felt that these three images captured a beautiful part of the heart and soul of the city and will help viewers understand the area better.

The McLennan County Courthouse

Designed and built in 1902 by architect James Riley Gordon, the McLennan County Courthouse sits in the heart of Waco’s lovely downtown historic district.  This stunning neoclassical building features three intricate rooftop statues, representing the justice carried out within the white stone walls.

Several notable legal cases have been tried here.  One of these was Clyde Barrow from the infamous Bonnie and Clyde duo.  In this courthouse, he was sentenced to two years in prison, which he escaped by breaking out of the McLennan County Jail.

The need for more office space has increased as the city has grown.  As a result, the courthouse’s interior was renovated, although many of the original design motifs were preserved.  If you ever find yourself downtown, take a moment to pause and admire this beautiful architectural creation.

The Green Door

Nestled in the center of Waco’s downtown historic district is a beautiful Art Nouveau-inspired door.  It is part of the Green Door Lofts on Austin Avenue and is truly a hidden gem among Waco’s most iconic photo spots.  If you’re looking for a daytime or evening activity, Downtown Waco is a great place to experience Waco culture through various events, historic buildings, coffee shops, restaurants, and boutiques.

One charming place to visit is the rooftop of Dichotomy Coffee and Spirits.  From that location, you can grab a coffee or a drink and watch the sunset over the Alico Building and the McLennan County Courthouse as the city gently falls into the evening.  We highly encourage you to take a stroll through the heart of Waco!

The Alico Building

Built in 1911, the Alico Building is one of the most iconic parts of the Waco skyline.  Steel framing had just been introduced into the world of construction and architecture, so when this method was used for the 22-story building, the Alico Building became a very innovative building for its day.

It remains the tallest building in Waco after a devastating tornado tore through the city in 1953.  The Alico Building miraculously survived with no significant damage, rendering it famous as a symbol of Waco’s painful history and its ability to withstand and recover from anything that would threaten it.

It currently houses the home office for the American-Amicable Life Insurance Company of Texas and rental office space
